The motto we live by. Two decades ago, the plight of street animals in Thane district was miserable. Driven by the serious lack of animal welfare and conspicuous dearth of the protection of animal rights, Thane CPCA was established. That one step led us to where we are today. We are a clinical rescue facility providing emergency medical relief for abandoned and destitute animals, birds and reptiles. At Thane CPCA, we not only save animals from suffering, but we also rehabilitate and release/rehome them. Wild animals are released back into their natural habitats, while domestic animals find new adoptive families.

The Indian animal welfare community is now having sleepless nights. It all started with The Supreme Court of India taking cognisance on the basis of a Times of India report of July 28th 2025 “ Delhi hounded by strays, kids pay price “ initiating a Suo Motu Writ Petition (Civil) No. 5 of 2025. The case led to multiple hearings and directives. August 11, 2025: An initial order directed Delhi-NCR authorities to capture and shelter all stray dogs. August 22, 2025: Following protests, a larger bench modified the order, directing sterilization, deworming, and vaccination, followed by release back into the same areas, prohibiting unregulated feeding. October 27,...

“The activist is not the man who says the river is dirty. The activist is the man who cleans up the river.” ~Ross Perot Maybe it’s time to really hear what Perot is trying to say. We talk about animal welfare and lobby against animal cruelty – a noble task indeed. We are however, so engulfed by actual acts of cruelty that we often overlook the other demon that threatens the lives of so many animals and humans directly and indirectly – pollution. It’s everywhere. You look around and there is always something polluting your field of vision. Thin plastic...

There isn’t a single animal lover whose world does not come crashing down with the passing of their furry friend. Losing an animal you love can be overwhelming. The grief is often a disenfranchised one, something that not everyone can empathise with. Yet, for those who have lost such love, the grief can feel like a seemingly permanent void, the loss irreplaceable, and the heart – beyond repair. Where does one look for solace in such grief? What hope does one cling to as life goes on? In 1959, then 19-year-old Edna Clyne-Rekhy, of Inverness (Scotland) lost her labrador Major,...

Not to hurt our humble brethren, Is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission: To be of service to them whenever they require it. As the Financial Year 2024-25 came to an end, and while we were still swaying to the tunes of brilliant songs of Kishoreda in a musical show hosted by Caring Friends for our staff, we looked back on April 1st 2005 when we followed our hearts and made our dream of running an animal hospital, a reality. We feared stumbling blocks and making a fool of...

- Peter Wohlleben Our organisation has always wanted to be associated with regeneration of forests. Our small facility is surrounded by a garden and embellished by a small pool, which after so many years, supports different types of life form : small wild birds, lizards, frogs in monsoon as well as the occasional snake. We know what variety of wildlife a full grown forest would be able to regenerate and support . The answer to our quest was Miyawaki afforestation. The Miyawaki method involves planting a variety of native species close together to mimic a natural forest ecosystem to create...

Imagine this. You don't have a roof over your head. You have no regular source of meals, you can only depend on garbage or handouts from kind people. You have a festering wound with maggots eating away into your flesh. You know you need medical help but you cannot ask for it because you cannot speak, you can only bark, meow, or bray. And that is why we do, what we do. Our desire to alleviate animal suffering motivated us to establish an organisation in 2002. The collective effort of a very small group of people grew since 2002. Next summer,...

2023 seemed to wrap up in the blink of an eye. It left some bittersweet news for us from around the globe. Canada restricted trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn. A bill was introduced in South Korea to eliminate dog meat trade by 2027. A very progressive Bill , it not only asked dog breeders and restaurants which serve dog meat to phase out of their businesses in 3 years and find new businesses to run or jobs to work in, but also promised financial aid to support them during this period. Bulls both in Spain and India faced...

Since I was a child, I have always felt an innate connection with animals of all kinds. From dogs to horses, their presence in my life has been a constant source of joy and comfort. They have bestowed upon me an unconditional love that knows no boundaries of species, and it is this love that has motivated me to become a pet parent.Throughout my journey as a pet parent, I have made a conscious choice to rescue animals rather than buying them. To me, a family member cannot be purchased; they are meant to be embraced and nurtured. Each one...

Hello friends We are back to warm your hearts and put back a smile on your face with our reports of what we did in the months of spring 2023. We had an action packed quarter, between January and March 2023. We have moved on after our name change, in fact we are loving our new name. “ Community” in place of “Society” encompasses a much larger scope of work and group of people. This transition has made little to no impact within our staff, and we are tickled that our community continues loving us for the work we do,...

You are serious about animals and their welfare, but don’t know what to do? You want to do something for them, but don’t have the time? You don’t know where to start from, being kind? Not an option any more. We are too connected electronically now to give these excuses. To start with, visit the websites of the large NGOs who have been working with animals since decades. Their reports, their stories and articles will give you a fair idea of the type of work that goes on in animal welfare and the issues that are handled. Such organizations very...

From the very first month of our existence, we have been rescuing unwanted pets. The word “unwanted “is very harsh, yet nothing can be truer. Every day, somewhere or the other, a pet animal is discarded, for various reasons. But mostly because the owners realize that maintaining a pet is just as expensive and time consuming as having a child. And because animals are expendable, while thankfully human children are not so much. Over the years, we have developed a very strong adoption protocol, tried and tested it several times each year, and have had 1000s of animals adopted over...

Evolve! “Everything has to evolve, or else it perishes” ~ John Knowles The last few months were testing. After one and a half years of numerous trips to the Assistant Commissioner of Charities’ office, we finally managed to process our organisation’s name change, and document our new name in various compliance departments. Although a couple of departments are still pending, we made it through to the other side of the tunnel. Evolution takes time. In nature a small change takes thousands of years to manifest, sometimes more. But it’s necessary, and it’s a great teacher. The entire essence of the...

The pandemic was a negative event for humans, but positive for the animal kingdom. The world spotted more free roaming animals, on the roads and in the skies, as humans were restricted. Nature healed herself at so many places. Our hospital witnessed zero cases of hit and run in the months from April to October. Care takers brought sick animals even without any conveyance, carrying them in arms, in gunny sacks. The cup of Kindness was not affected. But come November, as restrictions were lifted, humans went back to their original selves, uncaring about the animals they share their world...

OUR CHALLENGES This never before Covid – 19 situation has been a difficult time for humans and animals alike, made more difficult by isolation. It brought a lot of anxiety adding to the already existing ones of impending statutory changes, which has threatened to negatively impact flow of funds. At the onset of the pandemic, the first and foremost concern was for the homeless – humans as well as animals! The State Govt. kept animals and livestock very low on priority, as is natural during any calamity. There were very few sources of food and water for the animals. Dry food companies...

All organisations need to go through changes in order to grow and explore. While some changes are introduced as new technologies to make work more efficient and economical, in other instances, changes are driven by external pressures and the need for mergers. Every year, Thane SPCA goes through some metamorphosis or the other, either in the way it functions, or procures and updates the facilities it provides. However, just like any other market, change ensures that Thane SPCA can continue to meet the demands and expectations of animal lovers across the district. In 2018-19, Thane SPCA acquired new medical equipment...

I have to agree with Bill, but not just because running privately or in long-distance races is a test of physical and mental endurance, but because it’s also a testament to the size of a person’s heart and soul, when he/she runs for a cause. This was more than evident in the Tata Mumbai Marathon that was organized earlier this year on the 21st of January – a massive event in which people with gigantic hearts chose to step up and run for causes close to their heart. The event’s fundraising platform – United Way of Mumbai saw people from all...
